Training was tough today. There were feelings. Strong feelings. From all directions.
We spoke with counselors and staff about very touchy subjects today and how to deal with them. In the form of scenarios, we talked about how to handle issues of racism and sexism. We also had a presentation about Rape Culture. What it was. Who it affects. How the media perpetuates it. How important it is to be aware of the issue and be the change. I can honestly say I learned nothing new because this is actually a discussion that I have a lot. But I'm so so so glad that McDaniel finds this to be something that Peer Mentors and RAs NEED TO KNOW to do their job correctly. The fact that they placed so much value into these topics shows that McDaniel is of the right mindset and will do all in their power to help should a problem arise. It was also amazing to see the reactions of my peers. They're thinking about it. They're looking for more information. They're talking about it to others. And the fact that they feel so passionately about it is so amazing because it means we can make a difference and create a community that is so much safer for these kids. One of my PNMs from last year is an RA. He saw the videos and the photos and graphs and was the first to raise his hand when asked what we thought about all this. And he went off. He ranted. He was clearly so hurt and furious and appalled. And he apologized so many times for venting so much but he seriously could not believe how atrocious people were and he said he would make it a point to speak to his residents about this topic and how to act appropriately. I have never been more proud of this child and it almost made me cry to think that things may actually change for the better. Little by little.
