So I had some pretty terrible cramps this morning. I was awake, pacing, for two hours. Ouch pain. But talking with God and listening to hymns actually always helps. So I prayed. A lot. About so many things. And it felt incredible. Honestly, I just need to make more time for Him. I mean we all do, and that's a given. But when I actually do it, it becomes so much more evident how healing and impactful the experience is.
We went to Karla's church today and there was such a beautiful message. The assistant pastor did a great job at being relatable and fun, but still so meaningful. It felt like a conversation. And one that I think many of us needed to hear. You can hear the same message a million times over, but sometimes you need to hear it in the right words. I want to share it with everyone. I just might!

Something Beautiful
GOD DOES NOT PUT YOU THROUGH ANYTHING THAT YOU CANNOT OVERCOME. HE WILL CARRY THE WEIGHT AND HELP YOU GET TO WHERE YOU NEED TO BE. GOD MADE YOU THE STRONG, CAPABLE, BEAUTIFUL HUMAN THAT YOU ARE, AND WHATEVER IT IS, HE WILL BE BY YOUR SIDE. So cry those tears, but know that the tears will end and they will be replaced with an incredibly glorious plan that God has for you. Oh my goodness. Have I mentioned I love Tori Kelly? Have I? Because THIS SONG is something every Christian needs to remember, and I cannot thank her enough for spreading this message to the masses, and in such a gorgeous way. UGH. This is going to be on repeat for 25 years.
Day 2: Comfort
Nothing like coming home to a peaceful apartment after a long day.

1-8-16
Sometimes, Disney gets it right. After all the class and rehearsal and running around, it was nice to spend the evening relaxing in the apartment. I was mostly excited to watch an episode of Girl Meets World. The episode was about girls in science, and how around middle school age, most girls lose interest and aren't really encouraged to pursue that field anymore. Riley, finding that to be absolutely ridiculous and sexist, refused to do the easy part of the assignment and insisted she wanted to learn and grow, just like anyone else. It reminded girls not to choose their interests based on what others say we can and can't do. Disney got it right, and I hope many young girls are inspired by this.
Day 8 (late): Underneath
Little Pepper, guarding our apartment Christmas trees.

Eventful Evenings
So it's September! I completed my August challenge! Good thing, too, 'cause I had absolutely no clue what to blog about today. A big thing did happen but that was more scary than anything (long story short: we passed a motorcycle accident and the lady was unconscious and bleeding, so I called 911 for the first time in my life. Not 100% sure what happened but help did get to her). So I thought, hey, I just won't blog today, since nothing happened. Until just now!
Adam texted me asking me to meet him in the library. Blessed Adam, he goes through a new problem every week. But I'm always happy to help of course because he's someone I ultimately care about and want to see happy. This was probably the first time, however, that he just held me and cried. So I knew this was a big deal to him and I needed to be there. He told me his stories and why he felt awful. And I completely understood why he felt so hurt and broken because I have been there! But, because I've been there and because I've learned, the answers felt so simple to me. So I advised him as best I could. I tackled each issue one by one until we found solutions that worked. I reassured him that, as long as he truly tried his best, it would all work itself out. And I even made him smile. We left each other on a joke! I actually made this kid feel better. He even called me smart :) It means a lot when you're able to help a friend. It also made me feel a lot better about this Peer Mentor job. I haven't really needed to have any heart-to-heart with them just yet. But should the time come, I think I'll be ready for it.
Then I went to the convenience store on campus and was attended to by a really nice gentleman who, despite being tired, was super friendly and helpful. And how can you not be happy about that?!
On my way back to my dorm I ran into Mirna. This was the part where my conversation with Adam (about working on yourself for your friends and then sometimes letting people go from your life if that's what is best) came full circle. We greeted each other and talked pleasantly about her lovely semester in Spain. I was actually caught up on some of the stuff going on in her life. And I am actually really glad we could talk because even if we're not super close anymore, and even though we disagree on a lot of things, I know that she is doing fine. She has found things in life to keep her happy and driven, and that is really satisfying to know. I'm happy for her. And I'm happy we can still talk every now and again. (sidenote you might find interesting, she's apparently dating Carlos! Little Carlousy! From our childhoods - more so mine cause I remember him from the Power Rangers pajama days -. How times have changed. LuzKarime would probably squeal if she saw him now haha. I don't talk to him really but he's always polite and says hi when he sees me. I'm sure if you were still here, you'd be good friends with him)

Important Conversations
Training was tough today. There were feelings. Strong feelings. From all directions.
We spoke with counselors and staff about very touchy subjects today and how to deal with them. In the form of scenarios, we talked about how to handle issues of racism and sexism. We also had a presentation about Rape Culture. What it was. Who it affects. How the media perpetuates it. How important it is to be aware of the issue and be the change. I can honestly say I learned nothing new because this is actually a discussion that I have a lot. But I'm so so so glad that McDaniel finds this to be something that Peer Mentors and RAs NEED TO KNOW to do their job correctly. The fact that they placed so much value into these topics shows that McDaniel is of the right mindset and will do all in their power to help should a problem arise. It was also amazing to see the reactions of my peers. They're thinking about it. They're looking for more information. They're talking about it to others. And the fact that they feel so passionately about it is so amazing because it means we can make a difference and create a community that is so much safer for these kids. One of my PNMs from last year is an RA. He saw the videos and the photos and graphs and was the first to raise his hand when asked what we thought about all this. And he went off. He ranted. He was clearly so hurt and furious and appalled. And he apologized so many times for venting so much but he seriously could not believe how atrocious people were and he said he would make it a point to speak to his residents about this topic and how to act appropriately. I have never been more proud of this child and it almost made me cry to think that things may actually change for the better. Little by little.
